Entertainment giants Walt Disney Co., Universal Studios, and Warner Bros Discovery have filed a joint lawsuit against Shanghai-based AI startup MiniMax, alleging "wilful and brazen" copyright theft. The case centers on Hailuo AI, a video app accused of generating unauthorized images and videos of iconic characters like Darth Vader, Minions, and the Joker.
The lawsuit claims MiniMax falsely suggested U.S. endorsement by using these copyrighted properties in promotional materials. Legal experts note the timing is particularly damaging for MiniMax, which counts HongShan, Hillhouse, and Alibaba among its backers. The plaintiffs seek maximum statutory damages under U.S. copyright law.
